Out transponder supports ES for ADS-B(out) but cannot be changed from SIL=0 so we are stuck with that. The GA air and ground systems should see it and that is what counts. But commercial systems will anyway see the transponder which is the primary (and mostly only) system that radars and airliner TCAS uses so that takes care of that risk.

  • People have said that ADS-B(out) through a transponder with SIL=0 will not be seen by commercial systems so is no good.
  • Some further thoughts from my own RV-8 installation – PowerFLARM on the coaming, ADS-B(out) via FUNKE transponder (SIL=0), PAW integrated as a hub for traffic data sending Wifi to 2 iPads with Skydemon and audio to the intercom: Once mooted as available for ADS-B only I gather it can be used for the EC system of your choice. The Government is about to announce a subsidy payment scheme for EC installations in GA aircraft and UAVs so the time is right to be looking at this. Bear in mind that although the CAA seemed to have a traditional mindset on ADSB or nothing, that has changed in the recent past and a network of systems now seems to be the way ahead. When you look at different EC fits, test them against 1 and 2 and see what you get for your money. The available systems are ADS-B on 1090 MHz and possibly 978 MHz if that comes to pass (which it might well), FLARM on 868MHz or PAW on 869 MHz. You may not see some of them but they may be able to see you. For example 15% of aircraft had ADS-B(out), many more aircraft had ADS-B(in) so some 33% of all aircraft had some interoperability. The mix of EC equipments looks complicated but we have analysed the interoperability in the conclusions.

Whist this is a changing situation you can download a snapshot analysis of that on our website here We collected all the data at the LAA Rally last year and extrapolated the result to match the aircraft distribution in the UK aircraft register.

  • To do that you need to know what sort of EC kit other light aircraft have.
  • Conclusion you need to know about other light aircraft especially near airfields. Gliders are a small risk to us if you stay away from the launch areas.

Airliners and fast jets are a minor issue to us although from the other side of the risk equation they may think we are high risk to them. Of the 82 aircraft like ours involved in collisions, 70 collided with each other so our greatest risk (85%) is us and of that risk and the majority (57%) occurs near an airfield. On a straightforward risk of your death basis, you are incredibly unlikely to be hit by an airliner and very unlikely to be hit by a military aircraft or a glider. Download my analysis of the last 33 years of UK mid-air collisions on our website here.

Assuming you want to reduce the risk of collision (rather than just enjoying watching the dancing icons) you need to know what it is that is likely to hit you. Here is some data and ideas on which to base such a concept: It is not just what is good or clever or reliable but what proportion of threat aircraft will your combination of systems enable you to see and avoid. The decision on what EC to fit is a tricky one but I think it is useful to get the facts and create yourself a mission statement for your installation. This solution (if it works) is cheaper than purchasing the Garmin certified GTX 345 ADS-B in/out Transponder and a power Flarm, Also has the added advantage for me, in that it talks to the Garmin G3X and GTN equipment. This only gives the ADS-B out but it takes its GPS source from the GTN 750 so I get a SIL 1 rated ADS-B out, which won't be ignored by Air Traffic services and TCAS systems., The AT1 traffic should mop up all ADS-B in signals. My ADSB out is a certified Garmin GTX 335 transponder. Down side is there are two Flarm antennas (I have opted for the fixed blade RAMI Flarm Antennas (one on the top and one below) and a GPS antennae which is a cheap (under the cowling) unit. It is about the same price as power Flarm. I have tested a demo program from an ipad which transmits dummy traffic to the device. Check out Still building so don't know if it works.

It also talks to the Garmin G3X and GTN devices which means I get the Flarm and ADS-B on the GTN750 and or on the G3X screens. Hi Mickey I have opted for the AT1 Air Traffic device.
